Our Work
According to Time Magazine (2015), 15 billion trees are cut down each year worldwide. The total number of trees has fallen by 46% since the beginning of human civilization. Trees literally hold the soil of the world together, so it is clear that we must plant more trees.
Senegal, where we focus much of our action, loses about 35,000 hectares of arable land each year due to desertification. Conversely, about 30,000 hectares are restored each year. Clearly, we must redouble our efforts and restore more.
Every year since 2006, between 200 and 300 young people from around the world have saved enough money to fund their travel, food, and accommodation, so they can volunteer to plant trees in Senegal, Mali, and Burkina Faso.
From 2006 to 2017, young volunteers from the Green Heart Foundation planted 20% of the trees that need to be planted as part of the Great Green Wall of Africa project in Senegal. For more information about this, click here.
Take a look at “The Great Green Wall: Africa for Africa” – a film about our work and the work of hundreds of young volunteers in Senegal. This film, directed by Małgorzata Frymus and produced by World Peace Lab Szczecin and Nyx Media, won the Peace Angel Award at the Angel Film Awards of the Monaco International Film Festival for non-violent films in 2015.
All environmental and humanitarian actions conducted by the Green Heart Foundation are strongly supported by the International Council for Economic and Environmental Development (ICEED), whose mission is to improve the economic, environmental, and social conditions of developed and developing countries by mitigating climate change and developing a new economic growth model that simultaneously targets economic performance and environmental sustainability. The work and projects of the Green Heart Foundation are co-directed by Ody-Marc DUCLOS (Vice-President of the Green Heart Foundation) and Kazunao SATO (Executive Director of ICEED).
